Abstract In order to study the influence of grey theory on the uncertainty evaluation of total station ranging, a grey evaluation model of uncertainty based on grey theory is established in this paper. The standard deviation and grey standard deviation solved by Bessel formula method, Bethels formula method, Range method and Maximum error method are compared with different samples. The results show that the grey theory model is simple and reliable, does not depend on the distribution of measurement data, and can obtain reliable uncertainty in the case of few data and small sample, which is of remarkable significance to improve the uncertainty evaluation theoretical system.
